Solid Ground Farm
Do you recognize these vibrant greens? Not only are these salad mixes popular, but they are also locally and sustainably harvested by young and dynamic farmers, Bryn Roshong and Wes Hannah of Solid Ground Farm in Kingston, NY.
Located less than seven miles from our Co-op and founded in 2015, Solid Ground Farm is part of the Hudson Valley Young Farmer's Coalition and a signing member of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York's (NOFA) Farmer's Pledge.
By signing this pledge, Solid Ground Farm (planning to become Certified Organic by the end of 2018), commits to (among other ethical promises):
1. Serve the health of the soil
2. Reject the use of all GMOs, chemically treated seeds, and synthetic substances
3. Pay a living wage to all farm workers
As part of the collaborative Young Farmers' Coalition, Solid Ground Farm is part of a national movement to create an accessible social and business network for independent farmers to share strategies for success. Beyond providing collectives such as the 'Non-GMO Buying Club,' the National Young Farmers' Coalition is also working towards passing the Young Farmer Success Act in the House. If passed, this Bill will add farmers to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program—thereby, encouraging more young people to choose careers in sustainable agriculture.
So, next time you see a package of beautiful greens form Solid Ground Farms on our shelves, remember Bryn and Wes and how much they contribute to our local economy and environmental future. Buying local and supporting independent farmers like them really does make a difference.
