Local Product Spotlight: The Green Palate
We recently had the pleasure of hosting one of our favorite local brands, The Green Palate, at High Falls Food Co-op for a sampling of their delicious vegan “meatballs.” Family owned and operated by Benedetta and Giovanni Barbaro, the Green Palate produces award winning, organic vegan cuisine, and is beloved in our area. You may know their pop-up mobile kitchen which has been operating seasonally in the center of Woodstock every May to October since 2011. Though the season may be over for their pop-up grill, don't fret! You can find The Green Palate’s frozen vegan meatballs and veggie burgers in High Falls Food Co-op’s freezer section!
We so enjoyed our time sampling The Green Palate’s products that we wanted to find out more about their company and share it with our members and shoppers. We sat down with Giovanni Barbaro to get the scoop. First we asked how The Green Palate came to be. “Benedetta and I began eating a completely plant based diet in 2008. After we started eating this way, we felt great, but it was a challenge to find great tasting vegan grocery items that were made of high quality ingredients. That’s when we turned to our own kitchen and our Mediterranean roots for inspiration.”
It wasn’t long before Benedetta and Giovanni took their plant based creations from their home to the public. In 2011 they began their seasonal pop up mobile “cafe” in the center of Woodstock, NY. “That’s where we test recipes and perfect them,” Giovanni says. The Green Palate’s menu became a hit with locals and visitors alike, and in 2014 The Green Palate won 1st Place for Best Main Course in The Taste of Woodstock. “It was a real honor, and we were very proud,” Giovanni says.
One thing lead to another, and now The Green Palate is available in fine stores, like High Falls Food Co-op. We carry The Green Palate products because we admire their commitment to using only the best local, organic, fresh ingredients that are non-GMO, dairy-free, and soy-free. Also, because they’re made with love in Woodstock. “We strive to use the least amount of ingredients possible when we create recipes; it’s less taxing on the immune system and easily digestible.” When it comes to vegan food, the Barbaros really know what they are talking about. In addition to producing their fantastic products, they work with many local restaurants to help them create excellent plant based menu options.
We thank The Green Palate for their expertise and scrumptious food. We look forward to hosting them again soon at HFFC, and seeing what compassionate plant based meals they will com up with next. As the Barbaros like to say… “Peace, love, and vegetables!”
