Spice up your summer with a taste of the Caribbean. Seasoned hot sauces are one of our favorite local additions to our grocery department. You can taste the love (and the spice) in every bite of their product, made in Saugerties, NY by Tamika Dunkley, and based on a treasured family recipe passed down from Tamika’s mother, Mama Blossom.

The flavor and taste of Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados and even Haiti can now be presented to your family and friends whenever you get the motivation to do so. Momma Blossom’s Original Pepper Sauces are crafted from a perfect blend of all natural and fresh ingredients, with no preservatives or artificial ingredients added.  They are made using the perfect combination of freshly blended habanero peppers, carrots, onions, garlic, and a number of other strategically selected flavorful spices.  Each of these increasingly hot and intensely fired hot sauces provide a distinctively different level of heat, while still maintaining the same great taste. Seasoned Delicious hot sauce blends are sure to please even the most discriminating hot sauce enthusiasts. Their ingredients ultimately produce a perfect balance of flavor and heat that can enhance any meal, sandwich or salad. They are ideal for just about any meal as an ingredient or a garnish.

Tamika says, “I’ve dedicated my life to studying the human anatomy and how it responds to the food we ingest. As western medicine continues to evolve; some may wonder what about alternatives to improving your overall health? No better way to improve the overall health of our bodies than improving the selection in what we choose to eat.” That’s why seasoned is make with such quality ingredients.

Pick up your bottle of Seasoned Hot Sauce today! And be sure to stop by the co-op and sample it on July 23, 2017 from 12pm – 4pm.

13. May 2017 · Comments Off on We Love Local: Raji’s Divine Delights · Categories: Events, local food, Uncategorized · Tags:

We love being able to stock our shelves with so many products made right here in the Hudson Valley.

One of our favorite locally made products is Raji’s Divine Delights, 100% organic, vegan, and gluten free snacks. Raji’s Divine Delights Coconut Confections are a truly delicious truffle treat nearly everyone with every diet can enjoy. We’re also big fans of her Spicy Sunflower Seeds. These are organic sunflower seeds, toasted in coconut oil, with lots of different East Indian spices added, along with hot peppers added for a bit of a kick. We caught up with Raji to learn more about her delicious, nutritious snacks!

Raji’s Divine Delights are handmade in Woodstock, NY. After sampling many of the treats available at health food stores, Raji decided to embark on a journey to create her own. “After a bit of experimentation, I created what I knew others would love as much I did.  My first creation was the Cacao Coconut Confection, made with raw Cacao.  When I took my first bite of the Cacao Coconut Confection,  I said out loud, ‘People would definitely buy these!’ After the first Cacao Coconut Confection, I created Cashew Coconut Confections, followed by Mango, Strawberry and Blueberry. The fruit varieties are freeze dried organic fruit and maintain ALL the nutrients of fresh fruit!”

So, we know Raji’s Divine Delights are delicious, but why should people choose them when they’re craving something sweet? Raji says, “I always tell people– you’re going to eat something sweet, but you should eat something sweet with healthy benefits. Every ingredient in my Divine Delights has some sort of health benefit. For example, coconut oil can positively affect hormones for thyroid and blood-sugar control.  People who eat coconut oil tend to have improvements in how they handle blood sugar since coconut oil can improve insulin use within the body.  Coconut oil can boost thyroid function helping to increase your metabolism, energy and endurance and help you to lose weight. Real maple syrup is packed with health-boosting properties and has a low glycemic index.  This natural sweetener features dozens of antioxidants that can help delay or prevent diseases caused by free radicals, such as cancer or diabetes. In addition, maple syrup has high levels of zinc and manganese, which will help to keep your heart healthy and boost your immune system.  It is not just any sweetener ~ it’s the BEST sweetener! You can learn about all of the ingredients on my website under the Healthy Benefits tab.

When Raji created her Divine Delights Coconut Confections, she didn’t know she would receive so many healthy labels of different diets like vegan, gluten-free, and paleo. She just wanted to make something tasty using whole, organic ingredients. “Many diabetics have even contacted me to thank for for using maple syrup, which they can eat because of the low glycemic index which doesn’t spike sugar levels.”

This is all wonderful news to us, but we still had to know, where does Raji source her ingredients? “I do a lot of research. I’m always looking for high quality, high integrity ingredients. Tierra Farm is one of my favorite resources to use. They are a New York state, certified organic manufacturer of dried fruits and nuts. I also go through a lot of Dr. Bronner’s Whole Kernel Organic Fresh-Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil.”

We adore all of Raji’s creations. If you haven’t tried them, now is your chance! Join us at High Falls Food Co-op on Friday, May 26th from 2pm- 5pm and sample this locally made sweet sensation. Thanks to Raji for talking to us, and for making her divine confections.

It’s no secret that we love locally made foods here at High Falls Food Co-op. That’s why we’re excited to carry Süperkrauts; sauerkraut made in New Paltz, NY. Süperkrauts are always raw, organic, and fermented without heating. They’re unpasteurized and full of vitamins, minerals and fresh pro-biotics. Is it any wonder why we love them?

Süperkrauts was founded by Moni Schifler after a journey to heal her son’s IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) lead her to her great grandmother’s sauerkraut recipe. Moni’s great grandmother with a farmer and sauerkraut maker in Vienna, Austria. She used this knowledge and fermented food legacy to ultimately heal her son through the use of raw vegetables and probiotics. Moni then made it her mission to heal others with her fermented foods, and a business was born.

When making Süperkrauts, Modi adheres to her company’s mission which is to make authentic sauerkraut that is only fermented in glass. Süperkrauts is committed to respecting our planet by using local produce and local suppliers while creating zero waste. 100% of Süperkrauts’ kitchen scraps are composted and sent back to their organic farmers. Süperkrauts is a name you can feel good about purchasing.

Aside from their efforts to heal people through food and to be an ethical, environmentally friendly brand, Süperkrauts is also helping the local community by providing women with employment. Süperkrauts is powered and run nearly 100% by women. That coupled with their use of only the finest certified organic produce New York’s Hudson Valley has to offer, makes us love Süperkrauts even more.

In 2015, Süperkrauts moved into a state of the art dedicated kitchen facility in a certified organic, certified gluten free, certified vegan, certified non-gmo, and certified kosher building. They never produce anything but Süperkraut in their kitchen, so you can count on always getting nothing but this pure probiotic product. Do something “güt for your gut,” pick up a jar of Süperkraut next time you’re at High Falls Food Co-op, or join us on April 21st from 2pm to 5pm and you can sample it in the store!

12. March 2017 · Comments Off on WE LOVE LOCAL: Bjorn Qorn · Categories: local food · Tags:

Hands down, one of our most popular items at HFFC is Bjorn Qorn, a popcorn treat seasoned with nutritional yeast, made right here in Ulster County. Not only is Bjorn Qorn super local, it’s popped by harnessing the power of the sun! We love that! Bjorn Qorn is owned and operated by two guys named Bjorn and Jamie, former college roommates who turned turned their favorite dorm room snack into a successful business. We recently spoke with Bjorn to find out a little bit more about his and Jamie’s delicious and nutritious ‘qorn.’

First things first, how did the guys come up with the recipe? “Well, my dad is a corn farmer,” Bjorn tells us, “so the recipe is a combination of how my family made popcorn, and how my childhood neighbors flavored popcorn. They introduced us to nutritional yeast as seasoning. The rest is history.” Indeed. In college, Bjorn’s popcorn recipe became a hit among his fellow students at Bard College. Jamie dubbed the treat Bjorn Qorn, and that set the wheels in motion.

“After college, Jamie and I went our separate ways,” Bjorn says. “I always knew that I wanted to start this popcorn business, but it wasn’t until about 10 years later when Jamie and I reconnected that it got off the ground. It’s great to have a business partner. Being able to share responsibilities helps to make things work. In 2012 we officially started Bjorn Qorn.”

Bjorn Qorn popcorn is currently popped directly by the heat of the sun using enormous mirrored reflectors to collect the sun’s rays and focus them on their kettles. Bjorn and Jamie keep their kettles on Kelder’s farm in Accord, NY. They use a mix of kernels grown at Kelder’s and kernels grown back in Minnesota on Bjorn’s dad’s farm. “We’re not certified organic, but we use the best growing practices we can. We use organic fertilizer, we’re non-gmo, and we don’t spray or use any types of herbicide.”

We had to know, now that Bjorn Qorn has taken off, what are the fellas plans to expand the company? “Well,” Bjorn tells us, “we’re transitioning into a new space! The red barn on Queens Highway just down the road from Kelder’s. We’ll be using all solar electric to power our poppers and our business; and we’re going to hire a staff! We’ve been doing everything ourselves up to now, so we’re pretty excited about assembling a team.” And any new flavors??? “Well, the demand is high for the classic Bjorn Qorn, but we will be able to have test kitchens in our new space, so we’re considering it. We’ve been thinking of salty and spicy flavors for a while now, so you’ll just have to wait and see!”

Thanks so much to Bjorn for taking the time to talk to us. High Falls Food Co-op is beyond pleased to be able to carry Bjorn and Jamie’s exceptional snack. If you haven’t tried it, you simply must. Bjorn Qorn is truly a jewel of the Rondout Valley.
